10 Steps on Hamster Breeding
Preparation for successful hamster breeding
1. Determine the sexes of your hamster. Look your hamster from above. The male tail bulges on both sides. The female tail is a trim line.
2. Determine the age. Female hamster should be at least 4 - 6 months old and male hamster should be at least 2 - 3 months old.
3. Determine the couple. Do not breed sibling hamsters. Father and daughter or mother and son is ok. Best of all, breed hamsters from different families, but from same breed type.
4. Determine the time. Female hamster is ready to mate every 4 days. The sign is if you stroke her back towards her tail, she will freeze on the spot, flatten out and lift her tail.
The hamster breeding procedure
5. Prepare if it is not the time. Wear gloves as both hamsters tend to fight if they reject each others. You must then separate them.
6. Take both hamsters and put them in a solitary place. Keep them there for 15 minutes to one hour.
7. If they are starting to lose interest in the mating process, separate them.
Things to do after the hamster breeding
8. Give the female hamster more food and some nesting material like shredded paper. Do not forget to take the exercise equipments out. It is better that you do not handle her, just leave her alone.
9. At day 10 after the mating, her stomach and nipples will be swollen. At day 14 clean her cage. The birth will be at day 16.
10. Stand the odor. Do not disturb or clean or even touch the cage until 3 weeks of birth time or the mother will not recognize the children and eat them. You can separate the male babies and female babies after 3 and 1/2 weeks and take them from the mother. After 5 -6 weeks they are ready to go to new owners. Or you can keep them all for yourself.
You then wait for another 3 to 4 months before you can breed the mother again. That is it, 10 steps on hamster breeding. Quite easy huh? So, happy hamster breeding!
